Who is Hudson Branch?

We are a band that has always been apt to do things on our own and with the help of those who support us. Never signed to a record label or recording contract of any sort, in the past 3 years we have made 3 EPs (The Hudson Branch, Music For Winter: Volume 1 & 2) and an LP(Tightrope Walker). We have toured the country extensively from Chicago to California and everything in between with our friends Dogs On Tour, and have collaborated with radio producers to create music for radio stories and multimedia projects.

All this we have done through the generosity and support of those who have enjoyed the art we make and have joined us in telling stories and making music.

Hudson Branch now has the opportunity to do something we never have before: venture out of our home studios and basements to record at Soma Studios in Chicago. Soma is run by veteran producer and musician John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and The Cake) who most recently has produced the new Broken Social Scene record. This opportunity comes as both an incredible surprise and a daunting task, so once again we ask for your help.

I'm pretty good with a melody...I can remember those pretty well.

Maybe that's why I like music like Sigur Ros and The Album Leaf so much...because I don't need to remember any of the words. I just need to remember the tune.

Recently I've been in a little "mistaken lyrics" interpretation battle with Robert while he is away at Capernwray for the year.

I understand.

I've had few chances to drive in a t-shirt with my windows down in the past month...and I cherished each of them.

However, I received a random email from a fan from Sweden who loved our Dogs On Tour CD.

So he wanted to use our song for a winter-themed time lapse video.

Hopefully we can release some Summer-y tunes in the next couple months to give us hope for warmer weather.

So I've got a cool little announcement.

You may be wondering why I haven't really had many pictures posted for the past couple of weeks.

There's a reason for that.

This past weekend I was officially offered a Full Time job at Willow Creek McHenry as their Technical Director.

I'm super excited about this.

This will definitely be taking up a lot of my time, but I still plan on being active with my camera.

Headed back to Judson for the first time in months.

I've only been back there a few times since I've graduated.

It's a weird feeling heading back to a place that you used to spend all your time at.

It's like when you head back to your parents house after moving out.

The furniture's in all different places....they have a new set of dishes... new pictures on the wall....

You can notice every little difference.

It reminds me of how I like to get my haircut these days....

When you get your haircut, your close friends notice immediately...and the new attention can be a little intimidating.

That's why I like having my friends around for when Margaret cuts my hair....they see the process of moving from one length to the next....so it's more of a subtle transition.

If you're not there for the slow process, than it seems like everything drastically changed.

Me and Margaret took a trip across the border to Canada to visit Kalyn.

We got a chance to check out Niagra Falls while we were there.

The last time I saw Niagra Falls, I was a 10 year old kid that had just finished two weeks worth of Magic Camp in New York state.

It was a different experience seeing them in the middle of the winter.

Massive chunks of the water were completely frozen hundreds of feet in the air.

It's really a sight to see.

It looks like something straight out of a Discovery Channel special.

We also completed the entire series of Mad Men.

Love that show.

And yes....

I did Mad Men-ize myself.

I did so while sipping on a homemade Old Fashioned.

The artwork for Volume 3 is from a failed negative from a one-time use camera.

I liked the way it looked so much I made it my background for a while...like I usually do with the other artworks that inspire previous volumes.

Some of the last pictures from the Dogs Go West.

We were stranded in San Fransisco when our breaks went out and had to be fixed.

So we found a dog park in the middle of the city and stayed there for the afternoon.

I just upgraded my camera to a Canon 7D.

Can't wait to see the good things that will come from that camera body.

I've been using the same camera for the last 3 years.

A lot of great shots were created with that 40D.

And I'm a little sentimental to downgrade it to my backup camera.

But I'm really excited to see how things go from here.

This was an unbelievable experience.

We've seen so much of the same type of terrain while driving in the southwest.

But nothing can compare to the scale of the Grand Canyon.

We all were left speechless.

Pretty crazy place.

Last night was a crazy awesome meteor shower.

We pulled off on the side of the road in Arizona and watched for hours.

It was the brightest stars I've ever seen in my entire life.

So I took the opportunity to do a little light painting and catch a ton of the stars (and the Milky Way Galaxy?) in the shot.

Today was the wedding of Jill & Landon.

I very much enjoyed myself.

The first interaction I had with Jill she was quoting Demetri Martin.

That's one of the fastest ways to become friends with me.

I brought along my laptop to show some of the pictures at the reception, and it was a pretty big hit.

So I got kinda excited to edit some of these together to throw online as soon as I could.

So my body woke itself up at about 5 AM telling me to edit the pictures and put 'em online.

So that's exactly what I'm doing.

I'm leaving for tour on Sunday for the next 2.5 weeks.

It's gonna be way too much fun...and there's gonna be tons of pictures from the whole experience.

Here's what I've been up to for the last week.

I shot and edited video together for the week at Merge, a week-long retreat in Grand Rapids.

It was fun and challenging to be working with video, and trying to see how I can translate over my skills from photography.

But i like trying to stretch myself to become good at both aspects of visual documentation.

Plus it was fun shooting with a 7D all week.

I might just have to update my gear once again.

Alot of talk has been going on lately amongst me and my peers on the system of education.

As a recent graduate, I had to hop through all the hoops in order to get that piece of paper handed to me on the stage.

But there's parts of me that have felt somewhat strained by what it is I'm being taught in school.

I've found it funny over the past 5 years or so that I'll be working on photography, or writing, or whatever interests me instead of working on schoolwork.

I dedicate all my spare time to developing my skills and expanding my interests educating myself on new processes, technologies, and artistic expressions.

But these improvements that I make in my own creative development are often not awarded with a good grade or a GPA I'd brag about.

This talk from the TED conference really struck home for me.

If you've never heard of TED before, it's a great source for excellent presentations and thought-provoking ideas.

He'll be moving pretty soon for his pilot job no longer doing as much photos as he used to.

I'm gonna miss having him around, but it'll be pretty sweet to visit him at wherever his new place ends up being.

Remind me to shoot a bunch of videos when I'm out at shoots.

So when I walked at graduation, I tried to think of a way that I could make it memorable.

I didn't want to do a dance...or whip a DSLR out of my robe (Robb Davidson style)...

So I figured I'd just keep my new camera around my neck and record from my perspective while walking across the stage.

A little shaky....but I like it.

Hello all.

I've got a few announcements to be making here...

First off, I just graduated from College.

That means I've been going at this "Photo-A-Day" thing for 4 years.

And as you can tell recently, I've been very slow to getting updates on here.

I'm starting to think that I may need to be changing the format of this site.

With my schedule getting fuller and fuller, I don't have the time or the drive to be taking as many pictures as I used to.

So lets try out a new format.

I still take a camera with me all the time, heck I just bought a point and shoot, I better.

So I'll still be updating...just not trying to force everything into a daily update.

Hopefully this will mean that when I do post stuff on here, it will be good, and it wont just be thrown together.

So maybe this is disappointing to some.

For me it's a sigh of relief.

I still feel guilty everyday that I don't update....so I'll still keep trying to update as often as possible.

Secondly....I've been working for a company called Imago.

We're gonna be working on some really cool projects coming up, so I'm really looking forward to that.

Also, wedding season is almost in full swing.

A whole lot of pictures will be coming in this summer of all the weddings I'll be at.

This is a great video of Jonsi's "Sinking Friendships"

It makes me crave a live DVD of this tour all the more.

I have a feeling I'll look back at my life 10 years from now, and I'll see this concert as one of the singlemost influential musical moments in my entire life.

The concert changed the way I see music, and the way I listen to it.

Every concert from here on out will be compared to this one.
